Raising money for worthy community organizations is one important way that many people enjoy giving back to the community. It doesn't hurt that it can also be fun.
One of the most dazzling annual events is the Fourth Annual Ruby Hill Giving Thanks Charity Ball, An Evening in the Vineyards, A Year of Giving. The ball will be held on October 14 at Ruby Hill Community Center Park, Pleasanton
A giant white tent will be the venue for this year's event that features dinner catered by Girasole, dancing, live and silent auctions, and drawings for items such as tickets for Al Davis' personal seats at the L.A. Lakers, and Super Bowl tickets including the football commissioner's party.
Last year, more than 500 people attended and, through attendance and corporate sponsorships, more than $300,000 was raised. This year's organizers are hoping to exceed that goal with this glittering evening.
Donna Garrison, committee member and event chair, said that the number of sponsors is growing each year.
"Our sponsors know that the money is being spent on worthwhile causes that help lots of people, primarily women and children, in the area," she says. "When sponsors attend they gain an awareness of the community and other people who are active in it. The event has become a huge success."
This year's generous sponsors include Hacienda's Tanner Companies, Prudential California Realty, FutureLink, Zantaz.com, ProBusiness Services, Wells Fargo Bank, and North American Title Co.
Proceeds will benefit eight East Bay organizations, listed below, helping women and children:
The Tri-Valley Haven offers shelter and support for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence. Hope Hospice is a resource that provides compassionate end-of-life care for terminally ill patients and support programs.
The Friday Night Live/Club Live is a middle- and high school program that promotes positive and healthy youth development and deters problem behaviors by engaging teens as active leaders. The Taylor Family Foundation provides summer camp to children with life-threatening illnesses, and their families.
California State University Hayward Community Service Scholarship Program gives endowment scholarships for students who volunteer with Tri-Valley nonprofit organizations. The School Age Mothers program is an alternative high school program that serves pregnant and parenting teens. R-Quest provides adult counseling and programs for substance abuse and eating disorders. Christmas in April helps rebuild and improve homes for low-income elderly and disabled homeowners.
